In the last decade, Asia has become an attractive market for the wine industry, as its consumption levels are rapidly rising. This is particularly true in the private auction segment, where they are credited in driving prices up due to the increasing demand for fine, rare wines. However, wine is not only consumed in Asia, but also made - and exports are growing.
In India, for example, vines are grown from the northern end to southern - even though the climate is sub-tropical. Vines have been grown here since Persian times (600 BCE) but it was not until the late 1990s that premium, export-quality wines were available. The vineyards in this humid climate are trained high in pergola style so as to protect the grapes from the sunlight and allow them to air out below the canopy. Thus far, there has been success with several varieties, from Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon.
Thailand also boasts a growing wine industry since the 1960s, particularly near the capital of Bangkok, although production seems more oriented on larger brands, rather than limited production. The country has proven to be quite versatile, growing lots of red varieties, from Dornfelder and Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon.
