Pewsey Vale Vineyard

Brand Description

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established at Eden Valley in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool climate wines. The early Pewsey Vale Vineyard Rieslings were exported to England where they won numerous awards in the prestigious wine shows of the era. Today Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a highly esteemed, specialist, single site estate vineyard with provenance. Riesling is our single focus.

Location of Vineyard

Elevated above the Barossa Valley on undulating land, Eden Valley is situated between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. At this altitude, the cooler temperatures and greater diurnal range allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity, with aromatics and fine flavours slowly developing well into the cool, dry autumn. The soils through Eden Valley are generally shallow, rocky and acidic, in many areas suited only to the grazing of sheep and cattle. There are special pockets with slightly deeper soils and finer rocks, where the vineyards have been planted.

Winemaking and Viticulture Philosophy

Pewsey Vale is one of the great Riesling vineyards of the world. Where a true alliance between nature and variety exists, the need for human intervention is minimal. Gentle guiding hands and an understanding of place are all that is needed to create consistent and delicious wines… vintage after vintage.

Acclaim
“Delicate lemon-lime and white floral aromas lead to an equally feather-light palate that’s buoyed by bright, citrusy acidity and more floral flavors to the mouthwatering finish. A bone-dry style with enough fruit to balance, it should evolve nicely over the next several years.” — acclaim for 2023 Pewsey Vale 1961 Block Riesling from Wine Enthusiast, Dec 2024
“Pale straw with classic Eden Valley aromas of freshly squeezed lime, Bickford's lime cordial and Christmas lily that mesh with tones of crushed stone, white flowers, fennel tops and lemongrass. Steely, limey and vital, as always, with a pulsing mineral cadence, finishing crisp, tight and essential. Thank goodness for Eden Valley San Pellegrino.” — acclaim for 2023 Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling from James Halliday, Aug 2024
“When these museum release wines waft past my olfactory gear, I'll often sit there pondering how lucky we are to have producers, in the current climate, who will hold wines back when the are hitting peak drinking. I salute you all. Straw in the glass with a swirl of complex aromas featuring drying hay, toasted brioche, Bickford's lime cordial, pressed citrus blossom, dried mushrooms, cultured butter, perhaps some curry leaf, crushed quartz and lemon barley further back. Still crystalline and focused despite all the toasty complexity, with a cadence and length that many would aspire to.” — acclaim for 2014 Pewsey Vale 10 Year Museum Reserve The Contours Riesling from James Halliday, Aug 2024
