Chocapalha Vinha Mãe

Vinha Mãe bottle image

Wine Description

Vinha Mãe, the flagship red of the estate, translates to “The Mother Vine” in Portuguese and is a testament to the strong yet soothing nature of the wine. Sourced from 27 year old vines and fermented in traditional granite lagares with successive machine pressings, this wine is aged in French oak barriques for 20 months.

Acclaim
“The 2011 Vinha Mãe (meaning the 'Mother Vine') is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional and 30% each of Tinta Roriz and Syrah. It was aged for approximately 20 months in a 50/50 mixture of new and used (second and third use) French barriques. This adds a layer of concentration to the regular Tinto and a bit more power. The first noticeable difference, though, is far more perceptible oak. That should integrate beautifully as the wine settles down. It has plenty of time to absorb some oak in the cellar. It should age pretty well. Its backbone seems nicely controlled, but it tightens and shows considerably intensity as it airs. It remains elegant in the mid-palate all the while. Did I mention that it is also pretty delicious? This is a potential beauty--meaning you really should cellar it for a couple of years, at the least, to let it show you more of what it has. It is certainly approachable, though. By a small margin, it was probably my favorite of the winery's submissions this issue.”

This is the reserve wine from Chocapalha, a powerful expression of mainly Douro grapes in the Lisbon region. It has dense tannins at this young stage, with layers of firm plums and a solid texture. For balance, refreshing acidity lightens up the whole edifice.
