Acclaim
"This is brilliant — a viognier that harnesses the best of the trademark varietal generosity and richness and delivers it with such delicate, almost feather-like touch. Years of hard work, refinement and a great vintage have combined to elevate this to greatness. It smells of ginger and apricot custard and is lightly spicy, enticingly floral and flinty. The palate builds in layers that unfurl beneath a pillowy texture, before revealing a sorbet-like acid presence. This holds light and creamy into the finish; it's superb. Drink now." — James Suckling, Jan 2017
"Louisa Rose, chief winemaker at Yalumba, presents this viognier as the winery’s flagship white wine. In fact, the variety has found a home in Eden Valley over the past 35 years, producing firm, mineral-inflected wines that show viognier’s character in their voluptuous textures rather than in pungent perfume. There’s nothing blunt or aggressive about this wine, selected from mature vines, fermented without added yeast in what Rose describes as “mature” French oak barriques and puncheons, where it later rests with the lees for ten months. Stirring the lees adds to the textural fatness, as well as the complex layering of fleshy grapefruit and passion fruit flavors. While the wine hints at lavender and lanolin, it’s not very aromatic, focused more on the mineral underpinning of its structure. A wine to cellar, it’s also one you could decant now, especially with a bowl of crab laksa, the spicy Malaysian coconut milk soup."

Wine Production

Handpicked grapes were whole-bunch pressed directly to mature French oak barriques for 10 months, where they were fermented by ‘wild’ or indigenous yeasts occurring naturally in the vineyard. These wild yeasts play a small and subtly different part in the development of the wine, creating layers of richness, complexity, fine textures and flavours. After fermentation the wine was aged on lees with regular batonnage for ten months to further heighten the palate weight and increase the complexity and flavour generosity
