“The 2021 Claret is based on 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot, 5% Malbec, and the rest Petit Verdot that spent 19 months in 27% new French oak, with the balance in used barrels. I think it's a touch better than the Columbia Valley Cuvee and has gorgeous notes of red and black fruits, bay leaf/bouquet garni, mint, and violets, with some background chocolaty oak. It's another medium to full-bodied, richly textured, velvety beauty that brings the fruit and texture.” — Jeb Dunnuck, Jul 2024
“Made from 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Claret opens with a broad, deep and juicy profile. It marks a monumental shift in the house style, showcasing a step in the right direction for quality-focused wine crafted with specific intentions. This wine is big and juicy, with a generous and well-rounded character that is not lacking in any aspect. The Claret is fresh and complex, unfolding fruit, oak and spice layers. It features fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity, creating a brilliant and flavorful finish that has me craving food. Bravo. The wine aged 19 months in 27% new French oak. The 2021 vintage marks a pivotal point for the Matthews brand.” — Wine Advocate, Mar 2024

Wine Production

Matthews Claret comes from several small vineyard parcels within Columbia Valley, namely key sites on Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, and the Royal Slope. The grapes are harvested in the early mornings, sorted, and fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is cellared in French oak barrels and carefully blended by the winemaking team.
