Domaine Maire & Fils
Brand Description
Several generations have been necessary to patiently built one of the largest and greatest estates in the area, focused on key appellations such as Château-Chalon, l’Étoile and Arbois. One of the most prominent owners in the Jura region, the Domaine MAIRE & Fils covers nowadays 238 hectares of vines producing all the area grapes varieties.
Preserving vegetation is crucial to develop a vineyard worthy of the name and produce wines of excellence. As an HVE 3-certified estate since the 2020 vintage, Domaine Maire & Fils implement an annual programme designed to promote the biodiversity of its winegrowing heritage. The bare soil is sown with nectar source plants to prepare the soil for 3 to 4 years before new vines are planted. These flower meadows also nourish the six beehives installed on the Sorbief plot, which produced their first honey in 2022. The initial hedgerow planting programme launched in 2020 will be extended to a larger scale in 2024, with an additional 7 hectares will be planted in Sorbief and Barodottes. Over 450 m of hedges consisting of 10 to 80 plants of different species will be represented among which dog roses, buckthorns, viburnums, black elders, hawthorns, blackthorns, dogwoods, European spindles, wild pear and apple trees and pussy willows. The lower part of the plot will be landscaped with a pond to accommodate amphibians and other fauna, once again contributing to the biodiversity of the estate.
The estate is also involved with the Observatoire Agricole de la Biodiversité* (National Agricultural Observatory for Biodiversity) programme, participating in a series of counting initiatives: earthworms, butterflies, wild bees and bats, some of which are indicators of how ecosystems operate, while others are invaluable in protecting vineyards.
Location of Vineyard
The Jura vineyards are great and single French terroirs, separated from their Burgundy neighbors during the Jurassic era. An deep knowledge of the Jura soils, and a plot-by-plot approach ensures the production of great wines, as only the cooler climates can produce.
Made from the local varietals Savagnin, Trousseau, and Poulsard, but also Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as in the neighboring Burgundy, the wines are expressing all the potential and diversity of this unique vineyard, the smallest one in France. From the authentic regional wines in the "Grand Héritage" range to the best terroirs of the estate collected in the "Grandes Parcelles" range.
Convinced of the unique Jura terroir’s potential, we have identified in the last years specific plots where Chardonnay and Savagnin vines were re-planted. Besides the traditional Jura appellations, we particularly concentrate ourselves in making wines of great freshness, with an airy, elegant and very mineral character: the Grand Minéral collection.
