Wine Description

Cantos de Valpiedra, made entirely of Tempranillo harvested in mid-September, is fermented in stainless steel tanks with a six-day maceration, before aging for 12 months in French and American oak barriques. It is a rich, round example of this famous Spanish style. In Finca Valpiedra the soil type is formed by a layer of pebble stones and limestone that give its name to the wines.

Acclaim
“Pure Tempranillo aged 12 to 14 months in French and American oak, then 18 months in bottle before it is released. Its savory strawberry and cherry fruit is layered with aromatic herbal notes, balanced by lively acidity and structured with ripe tannins.”
— Rebecca Murphy, May 2017

Wine Production

All the grapes of Cantos and Finca Valpiedra come from the estate. The harvest is made by hand and in boxes, with of a first selection of bunches from the vines. Later, a second and rigorous selection at the winery: the grapes go to a sorting table, before entering into the winery, where all the grapes that are not in a perfect state are rejected.

The grapes, once harvested and selected, are emptied in the reception tank where it is destemmed and then goes to the fermentation tanks. The winery has 31 small tanks where the different varieties (Tempranillo, Graciano and Maturana Tinta) from different plots are fermented separately.

In this way, we select only the tanks that fulfil the demanding quality conditions we require to elaborate Cantos de Valpiedra and Finca Valpiedra.

The heart of the winery is a pavilion with 2,500 oak barrels, stacked at maximum 3 layers, with appropriate and constant levels of temperature and humidity. In this pavilion, our wines age between 12 and 14 months, getting the organoleptic characteristics we require. For these wines we only use new French and American barrels. The wood gives, in any case, a secondary profile, as mainly guarantee of longevity and length of our wines.

About the Vineyard

The Ebro River creates four big meanders in its way through La Rioja. One of them, between Fuenmayor y Cenicero, two towns devoted to viticulture, is the one where the 80 hectares of vineyard of our winery are planted.

Finca Valpiedra is a spectacular landscape divided into three terraces which slopes down to the river itself, and that our technical team has differentiated into fourteen plots, with altitudes between 406 and 427 meters.
