Wine Description

One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gai’a Estate (pronounced Yay-ya) was established in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos and winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Their mission was to capture the best that Greece’s indigenous grapes have to offer by merging traditional viticultural and production methods with innovative techniques. The estate is named after “Mother Earth,” in honor of the unique terroir that gives birth to these world-class wines.

Acclaim
The Gai'a 2023 Assyrtiko Monograph (in a screw-cap bottle) reveals an easy-drinking profile with freesia blooms and honeysuckle. Fruit comes from an impressive 800 to 1,000 meters in elevation from the Nemea area of the Peloponnese. You do not get the same mineral focus that this grape shows on Santorini, but you do get unexpected floral notes with pretty freshness and saltiness to follow. There is hint of green olive at the back. The wine is lean in character, but there is enough texture to pair with grilled fish drizzled in lemon juice and olive oil. — Wine Advocate, Dec 2024
