Wine Description

In 1981, fifth-generation winemaker Stephen, and Prue Henschke purchased a property in the Adelaide Hills with the intention of planting varieties well suited to the cooler climate of the region. The vineyard was originally part of a beautiful valley of apple orchards and natural forest that were destroyed by the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. The pinot noir vineyard has been named after Charles Giles, an early pioneer whose descendants had managed the property as an apple orchard since 1864.

"From 25yo vines on the estate Lenswood vineyard, picked between 19 Feb and 13 Mar, an exceptionally long period for a single vineyard wine. It's expensive attention to detail. Open-fermented in wax-lined vats, matured for 9 months in French barriques (19% new). Bright crimson hue; it has a very fragrant and flowery bouquet setting the scene for red cherry and wild strawberry fruits on the palate, lengthened by very fine tannins, oak lost in the crowd. Elegance and purity are its keywords."

"This is a great edition of Henschke's Lenswood pinot noir from a vintage that has delivered an elegant yet powerful style. It's innately balanced, too: a vigneron's dream. Smells of bright red cherries, bracken and background spices. Some blue fruits and hints of savory brown spices are also on display. Tight-packed and disciplined palate with a crunchy core of strawberry, raspberry and red-cherry flavors. Fine tannins envelop a pastry-like texture and a resolute pop of acidity makes for a convincing pinot. This will evolve brilliantly for 6+ years."

About the Vineyard

Sitting at an altitude of 550m with an annual average rainfall of 1100mm, the Lenswood vineyard slopes offer not only beautiful views towards the older vine country, but also provide enough sunshine to fully ripen the grapes, together with cooler temperatures to retain natural acidity.
