Henschke Henry's Seven

Henschke Henry's Seven bottle image

Wine Description

The shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

"Henschke’s entry-level red in the US market is the 2020 Henry's Seven, a blend of 72% Shiraz (co-fermented with 3% Viognier), 13% Grenache and 12% Mataro (Mourvèdre). It sees just 5% new oak, with the balance aged in older hogsheads. Hints of asphalt and black olives appear on the nose, backed by blueberries, raspberries and black cherries, while the medium to full-bodied palate is supple, marked by soft, almost-powdery tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish.”

"72/13/12/3% shiraz/grenache/mataro/viognier, the viognier co-fermented with shiraz. Matured in 5% new French oak hogsheads for 10 months; 50% of average yields. Shiraz is from the vineyard diagonally opposite Hill of Grace, 'Schillings', on the other side of the church. Young vines, taken from Hill of Grace stock in the early 2000s. Grenache is from the Valley floor, and mataro from estate Valley floor vines. This is precisely what Barossa blends are about. Shiraz always takes a strong lead role in Henry's (almost three-quarters here) but the vines are young and the fruit precocious, so grenache, mataro and even a dribble of co-fermented viognier play well about their weight in building a supple, spicy and juicy style of amiable appeal. Just the right amount of dried herb and greengage plum character and finely textured tannins keep things serious on the finish. Delicious!”– (Silver)
