Henschke The Wheelwright

Henschke The Wheelwright

Wine Description

The Wheelwright pays tribute to the founding fathers of the Henschke winery and vineyards, winemaker Johann Christian Henschke. He was among the first generation of the early Barossa German pioneers of South Australia, and establighed the family winery in 1868. Johann Christian arrived as a skilled stonemason and wheelwright and planted his first vineyards in the high country of the picturesque Eden Valley. The wine is produced from Old-Vine Shiraz planted a century later, in 1968, by fourth generation Cyril Henschke.

Acclaim
“From 1968 plantings, the Wheelwright is a relatively new addition to the Henschke range, which has very much come of age in 2019. The Shiraz The Wheelwright delivers a powerful yet well-controlled core of blackberry, woodsmoke and soy sauce aromas with significant layers of dried herbs and charcuterie. It is sturdy and focused with a strong tannin backbone before opening out with expressive earthy, meaty olive tapenade tones. Excellent shape and balance drive an exceptionally long, seamless finish.” — Vinous, Aug 2024
“Smoky charcuterie notes mesh with dried lavender, tapenade, eucalyptus and violets. The tannins are firm and pliant. A full-weighted wine that is typical if the region and likely of ample potential. Yet for now, it lacks elegance and is a bit monochromatic.” — James Suckling, May 2024
