J Portugal Ramos Quinta da Viçosa

Wine Description

Quinta da Viçosa is one of João Portugal Ramos' biggest vineyards, with a total of 100 acres located near Estremoz. In this vineyard different grape varieties have been planted every year, with the winery choosing to plant one Portuguese variety and one foreign variety to produce this wine, which is always new and appealing to the consumer. In this wine, the vintner has chosen to blend the international Syrah with the indigenous Trincadeira. Part of the harvest is foot trodden in marble troughs, known as lagares, and the remainder is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in new French and oak half barrels.

Acclaim
“The 2009 QUINTA DA VICOSA ‘S.T.’ is, as the S.T. hints, a Syrah / Trincadeira blend, each sourced from different soils (Syrah, limestone; Trincadeira, schist) and then aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. This single vineyard offering changes its blend when appropriate—in one year, for instance, it was a Touriga Nacional / Merlot blend. Very smooth, restrained and a little creamy in texture, there is a hint of olive, a nuance of earthiness lurking underneath and a nice feeling of solidity. There are tannins hiding, too, but they are well integrated and never overly aggressive. This is a seductive bottling that grew on me with time, showing its finesse and fine balance to go with its lingering flavors and becoming bright and lively after the creamy, restrained start. Drink now-2020.”
— Mark Squires, Feb 2012
"Very minerally at its core, boasting vibrant red plum and berry flavors that feature plenty of licorice snap. The juicy finish is crisp and well-spiced, with lots of powerful dark chocolate notes."
— Kim Marcus, Jul 2012
