Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon

Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Description

'Son of' the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries the structure, power and tannins of classic Cabernet in an earlier drinking, more forward style from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.

Acclaim
“While filius means son in Latin, this generation might think it affiliated with a Harry Potter character – Filius Flatus or maybe Filius Fabulosa. I digress. The range is the very good, any day drinking options with more oomph than the Classic wines. Not too complicated or complex yet often excellent and well-priced for the quality. Mulberries and cassis, star anise and wood cedar but not oaky, only used barrels for aging. Hints of dark chocolate, juniper and mint while the medium-bodied palate has a bit of puckering acidity and decent tannins. Pour now, enjoy with hearty fare. Now, Slytherin or Gryffindor?” — James Halliday, Aug 2024
“A fabulous vintage of Filius, and a total bargain for this level of quality. Layered aromas appear from first sniff: plump currants and plums, dark chocolate, savory herbs and florals, graphite and a mineral, iodine-like nuance. In the mouth, there’s bright fruit and silky texture, with savory, fine tannins and a long, elegant finish. Made to drink now or to age for several more years. A wonderful intro to this distinctive Aussie style.” – (Editors’ Choice) — Wine Enthusiast, Jun 2024

Wine Production

A remarkably ripe and soft wine. The individual batches were destemmed and fermented as whole berries using only wild yeast residing on the fruit. Cabernet parcels underwent a suitable duration of maceration to extract a fine backbone of structural tannins and blackcurrant laden fruit. Malbec and Petit Verdot were pressed off skins earlier to maintain a soft and luscious mouth feel. The resulting wines were matured in fine French oak for 12 months prior to blending. Limited racking was used to help preserve the delicate wild characters captured in this low intervention approach.
