Vasse Felix Tom Cullity

Wine Description

Vasse Felix, Margaret River's founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. Among his first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines, from which he produced the estate’s first red wine. The Tom Cullity descends from these original vines and represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix.

Acclaim
“The 2018 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec is one of the greatest Cabernets to emerge from Margaret River. It was a sensational season: warm and dry, devoid of significant viticultural challenges, profuse in marri blossoms... What more could they ask for. Many producers made their best wines ever in this vintage. The 2018 is floral on the nose, with garden roses (Boscobel, specifically), graphite, pink peppercorns, blackberry, licorice, star anise, clove, raspberry pip, nori and a hint of red/Panang curry (?). It's sensationally structured—firm and ductile—kind of magical in its way. The great thing about this 2018 is that it feels stuck in time. It isn't even starting to evolve, and that's pretty exciting. The forecast (by me) that 2018 could be one of Western Australia's greatest vintages felt premature at the time, but as we start to see these wines embedded in verticals across the Margaret River region specifically, it is showing that early assessment to be pretty spot-on. There are exciting times ahead for this wine. I'd still suggest you don't open the bottles yet. This wine has such a bright future ahead that you would be in danger of truncating its greatness should you choose to exhibit impatience now. It's up to you.” — Wine Advocate, Apr 2024
“The 2018 vintage can comfortably be described as being one of the greatest, if not the greatest vintage in Margaret River’s 55-year modern history (i.e., since 1967). When this 2018 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec was released, it was both satisfying and terrifying. The former, because it confirmed everything I had suspected/hoped prior to its release. The latter because it would force me to put my neck on the line and give it the score I believe it deserves. Having seen it blind a number of times in an esteemed international company, I am comfortable that this wine more than stands up alongside its counterparts from Bordeaux and Napa in the 2018 vintage. It is a marvelous example of Margaret River Cabernet, in that it offers us red raspberry, pomegranate, cassis and red licorice, alongside pink peppercorns, nori, sun-dried kelp, hints of iodine and earth, and all of it framed by ferrous tannins. It is fresh, it is structured, it is incredibly long. It will live forever.”

Wine Production

All blocks destemmed only without crushing and then allowed to ferment naturally. The Cabernet Sauvignon (making up 78%) was static fermented, gently pumped over through a splash tub and then left on skins for up to 30 days. This was a particularly brilliant year for tannin ripeness and the time on the skins allowed for the wine to become structurally sound and stabilised. The Malbec and Petit Verdot (making up 22%) were open fermented, hand plunged and pressed dry. The small sections were basket pressed to fine French oak and matured for 19 months. The strength of the fruit in this vintage resulted in a greater contribution from new oak compared to previous vintages.
