The majority of the world's Nebbiolo comes from the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC (which contains the highly regarded Barolo and Barbaresco DOCGs). The grape flourishes in Piedmont vineyards nestled between the cool Alps and the balmy Mediterranean Sea.
With a delicate floral and red fruit nose, Nebbiolo's earthy layers, grippy tannins, and full body can be a revelation on the palate—especially with complex and aged Barolos.
According to a recent report from Drizly, consumer curiosity about Italian reds is on the rise and Nebbiolo is one of the fastest-growing red wines on their platform.

The Stupino family purchased their Piedmont estate and vineyards more than 60 years ago, but Nebbiolo and Barbera have been bottled from the estate since the turn of the 19th century.
Santo Stefano is one of the largest vineyards within Barbaresco and lies close to the Tanaro River, the majority of the vines there 50+ years old. The unique microelements found in the soils impart crispness and hints of balsamic into the wines, which make them quite distinct from other Barbarescos.
In 2012, Achille Boroli, son of the founders, became head of the family business and set his eye to the future. He reduced production, updated the company's winemaking technology, and implemented low intervention methods in his determination to produce some of the finest Barolo wines in Piedmont.
"Boroli wines are the highest expression of the philosophy of our job: quality with no compromises," he said.
The elegant 2019 Barolo Del Comune Di Castiglione Falletto was rated a 93 by Wine Advocate and the younger, fresh fruit-forward 2021 Nebbiolo 1661 was awarded a 94 by Wine Enthusiast.
Pico Maccario Winery is run by two brothers whose goal is purity and balance in every bottle. They are dedicated to expressing the pure Piedmontese traditions and terroir in their wines, following in the footsteps of four generations of family working the land.
Located in the town of Mombaruzzo in the heart of Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Pico Maccario produces a range of Italian varieties, but only a select amount of Barolo.
With grapes grown in primordial, finely textured soils and then carefully handpicked, the resulting 2019 Barolo is intense and velvety with layered spice notes and strong tannins.
Drizly reports that imported Italian varietals are now second to domestic reds in terms of preference. For customers who gravitate to Pinot Noir, introduce them to Nebbiolo, its rose-scented, spicy cousin.
With Nebbiolo being one of the drivers in this increased interest in Italian varieties, Winebow customers are well-positioned to be on the rising edge of this trend. We offer a range of premium to ultra-premium wines from the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC that can satisfy a variety of palates and price points.
"Good Nebbiolo wine is still extremely difficult to find outside its homeland in north-west Italy." - Jancis Robinson
