Wine Description

Weingut Stadt Krems was originally founded by the city of Krems in 1452 to support a local hospital for city residents. With over 550 years of history, Weingut Stadt Krems is one of the oldest wine producers in Europe.  Since July 2003, the estate is managed by a young, innovated team directed by Fritz Miesbauer.  The flagships are Riesling and Gruner Veltliner (over 90%).

Acclaim
“Lime zest and green pear peel on the nose turn into fuller, zestier flavor on the palate. Leafy pepperiness joins the fresh conference pear fruit and makes for a lovely, if very light, texture. This wine is an accomplishment for such a difficult vintage.”
— Wine Enthusiast, Jul 2015
“With no less clarity or (at 12% alcohol) buoyancy than its 2013 counterpart, this cuvée features snap pea, pepper cress, crab apple and white peach in a performance of invigorating tartness and piquancy. The texture is satiny, yet the wine also delivers consummate refreshment. Salt and pepper add to the mouthwatering stimulation of its long finish. Despite having not been harvested until early November, this was bottled on January 20 due to demand. Yet such a short élevage doesn’t seem to have come at any obvious cost. (This bottling, officially classified as ‘Kremstal DAC’ but otherwise without any special name of its own, represents, as usual, the intro-level Stadt Krems offering in the US, and while dominated by loess sites, incorporates first passes on several Urgestein parcels. As usual, too, there are only about a quarter as many bottles as of the estate’s Loessterrassen cuvée, which is sold overwhelmingly within Austria.)”

Wine Production

Grapes were hand-harvested at the end of September. Fermentation and aging took place in large, stainless steel tanks to maintain purity of fruit. Wines were released eight months following fermentation.
