Castellare I Sodi di S. Niccolò

Castellare I Sodi di S. Niccolò

Wine Description

I Sodi di San Niccolò was created in the early 1980s to demonstrate that native grapes could produce a wine with all the power and grace of a Super Tuscan.  The name "I Sodi" refers to land that is difficult to till (the grapes must be hand-harvested), and "San Niccolò" is an abandoned church on the Castellare property.  This wine captures both the rich history of the vineyard as well as the Sangioveto grape's enormous potential.

Acclaim
“Dark, brooding, thick and profound, the 2014 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is one of those wines that pushes the quality limits of Sangiovese. The blend here is 85% Sangioveto (an antique name for Sangiovese) with 15% Malvasia Nera. The wine is aged in barrique for 30 months. The bouquet shows black fruit aromas with elaborate spice, toasted nut, cured leather, licorice and crushed stone or granite. The purity of those aromas is profound and impressive. What I appreciate most about this wine is that it delivers this rare level of quality in what was not an easy vintage.”

“The flagship I Sodi di San Niccolò is fabulous in 2014. Like so many wines in this vintage, I Sodi is going to need time in bottle to be at its best given the naturally nervous, sinewy style of the year. Even so, there is quite a bit of depth and persistence in the glass. I would prefer to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years.”
