Acclaim
“Alejandro Vigil said that the first El Enemigo vintage was like having a hypothesis proven: “I was looking for reds that would age well, so since 2003 I had been studying how Nebbiolo evolved, getting skinnier and leaning more and more on the freshness.” He set out to produce this equilibrium with a co-fermentation of Malbec with 7% Petit Verdot, aged in foudres. The result is a textbook wine: an evolving, layered bouquet of undergrowth, mushrooms, dried flowers and hints of kirsch and jam, leading on to a smooth, delicate palate with polished tannins that add grip and provide the backbone as well as making the silky texture even more light-footed. Delicious now, it will last in the bottle for years to come.”
— Vinous, Oct 2020
The 2008 El Enemigo Malbec contains 7% co-fermented Petit Verdot and was aged in 70% new French oak for 14 months. Medium purple in color, it gives up a pleasing perfume of cedar, spice box, lavender, black cherry, and blackberry. Full-bodied on the palate, with layered fruit, plenty of spice, and some elegance, this lengthy, flavorful effort will evolve for 2-3 years and provide peak drinking from 2012 to 2020.
