Licia

Brand Description

The family winery project of HGA Bodegas y Viñedos de Altura was born as a result of enthusiasm and affection for the world of Galician wine. The Gómez family has been producing wine in O Rosal as a family tradition since 1954, and in 2001 they decided to take their passion to the professional level, offering quality wine while exploring the true expression of their vineyards.

Location of Vineyard

DO Rias Baixas, located in Spain's Galicia, is known for its lush green landscape, Atlantic influence, and fjord-like mountainous inlets dotting the coastline called ‘rias.’ The region’s maritime climate results in wine with refreshing acidity and greenness. The vineyards for Licia are found in Vilachán (Tomiño, O Rosal). While the area is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Miño River, it's hillside location sits at an altitude between 200 and 350 meters where the vines are not affected by fog or cold temperatures found on the peaks. Its southern orientation ensures good sun exposure, which contributes to the ideal ripening of grapes.

Winemaking and Viticulture Philosophy

Winemaker Pablo Ibáñez is a third-generation winemaker, master of viticulture and member of the tasting committees of several Denominations of Origin. He studied enology at the University of Requena (Valencia) where he earned his master’s degree in Viticulture, Enology, and Wine Marketing. Despite being born in Bierzo, he decided to develop his career in Galicia after falling in love with the style of its wines, the beauty of the region, and the challenge of manual viticulture.

“This fleshy white offers pear, melon, blanched almond and tarragon flavors. Firm acidity keeps this focused through the citrusy finish.”
— acclaim for 2016 Licia Albariño from Wine Spectator, Aug 2017
“Limpid yellow. Lemon zest, green apple and a subtle herbal quality on the nose and in the mouth. Dry, chewy and focused, showing good energy and a touch of bitter quinine on the back half. Finishes on a firm note, with repeating citrus fruit character and good length.”
— acclaim for 2016 Licia Albariño from Vinous, Mar 2019
“Punchy citrus, apple and lanolin aromas are a bit dusty and entirely typical of Rías Baixas Albariño. Direct citrus flavors and a note of briny orange peel finish a bit salty, with a hint of green banana.”
— acclaim for 2016 Licia Albariño from Wine Enthusiast, Sep 2017
