Wine Description

Foz de Arouce Tinto is sourced from the schistous alluvial vineyard of Quinta de Foz de Arouce, which has been in the family of Count João Fillipe Osorio since the twelfth century. The wine, which is 85% Baga and 15% Touriga Nacional, is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak for eight months.

Best Buy! “João Portugal Ramos makes this wine at this father-in-law’s estate near Coimbra; its consistent excellence raises the question as to why no one else has planted vines nearby. This is 80 percent baga, the balance touriga nacional the main selection from 150 acres of vines planted on schist-based soil a 45-minute drive southwest from Cantanhede in Bairrada. This vintage captures the cool spice of baga in a firm, juicy red. There’s energy in the length of the wine, the clarity and delicate pointedness of the acidity balanced with a touch of chocolate softness in the tannins.”

“The 2012 Tinto Quinta de Foz de Arouce is a blend of 85% Baga and 15% Touriga Nacional, aged for 8 months in one- to two-year-old French barrels. This Tinto is well on the understated side, not overly concentrated, but fresh, lively and lifted. The more I sat with it, the more I liked it. With a bit of tension and grip on the finish followed by some fruity notes, this elegant Tinto should drink well over most of the next decade or so. It may still have a chance to improve with a year or two in the cellar. As (mostly) Baga goes, this is very modern and refined.”
