Wine Description

The name is derived from the battle (“bataille”) that took place where the château and vineyard are today during the Hundred Years’ War, around 1453. In this battle, the French re-conquered the neighboring Château Latour from the English, a crucial point for ending the 300 year long reign of the English in Aquitaine. The vineyards spread out over 57 hectares with the average vine age being 40 years old. The soil is silica and gravel, but the heart of the vineyard is on a deep gravel bed over a subsoil of clay and sandstone. There are also some parcels located in between Château Latour and Pichon Lalande.

“Such easy enjoyment to be had here with typicity and pure drinking pleasure on offer. Salted, baked cherry pie notes on the nose with cedar, nuts, smoked bacon and red fruit. Punchy, vibrant and still muscled on the palate. You can feel the energy and structure straight away - filling, lively, big boned but fun and exciting too. High acidity and red berry fruit are perfectly weight and balanced, all in harmony with quite a mineral tang that lingers. Fine tannins have a crushed stone flavour and texture and this is persistent and long lasting. Lovely.” — Decanter, Oct 2023
“Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 1982 Batailley continues to perform well despite never really being the "go-to" Pauillac in this vintage. This might be the best of a dozen or so bottles that I have tasted over the years. The nose here is the most intense that I have encountered, with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit and cedar and a savory touch that becomes more pronounced as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a classic Bordeaux here with good structure and a bullish, tobacco-tinged finish that is conservative but does the job. It cuts away a little too swiftly, but there is just enough dryness to keep you returning for another sip. I can see this continuing on its plateau over the next 15-20 years; and, while it will never challenge the likes of Latour or Pichon-Lalande, it will satisfy a great number of wine lovers.
