Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione

Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGT bottle image

Wine Description

The vines used for Il Carbonaione, some more than 90 years old, are rare clonal examples of the famous “Sangiovese di Lamole” varietal in the Chianti Classico area. The vineyard plot “Il Carbonaione” is so named because the Fiore family found evidence indicating a charcoal pit (in Italian ‘carbone’) was located there many years ago.

Acclaim
“From a classic vintage, the Poggio Scalette 2021 Il Carbonaione is a rich and darkly colored expression of Sangiovese with black ruby hues. There is more color saturation here than you would find in most Sangiovese-based wines, and this bottle could be matched to heftier foods featuring red or game meats. The wine holds to the palate with intensity and imparts solid and lasting fruit weight.” — Wine Advocate, Jul 2024
“The 2021 Il Carbonaione is a regal, elegant wine. Silky, beautifully perfumed and persistent, the 2021 is everything I wasn’t from Il Carbonaione. All the purity of Sangiovese caresses the senses in a wine that is both texturally intense and also light on its feet. Dark red-toned fruit, rose petals, cinnamon, new leather and cedar are some of the many nuances that open in the glass. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together in style. I would give this a few years in bottle, or a healthy decant if that is not possible.” — Vinous, Jul 2024
