Wine Description

Domaine Jean Grivot is among the great names in Burgundian wine. Étienne Grivot and his wife Marielle took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The vineyards are densely planted and farmed organically “sans certification” while the aim in the cellar is for balance and clear expression of terroir.

Jean Grivot’s 38.3 acres spread across 22 appellations with vineyards in the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Besides the three grand crus, there are 8 premier crus including the much lauded Les Beaux Monts and Suchots in Vosne-Romanée. The grapes are completely de-stemmed and fermentation is spontaneous.

Acclaim
“The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru is extraordinarily intense on the nose with pure black fruit, wilted violets and crushed stone scents. Very harmonious, the oak is supremely well assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, fine-boned tannins that frame the weighty, mineral-rich black fruit. There is density and authority on the finish. It is a 2019 that requires serious aging, but it will be worth the wait. An exemplary Richebourg.” — Vinous, Dec 2023
“(From Richebourg proper). An ultra-spicy, ripe, elegant and admirably pure nose offers up ultra-fresh notes of dark berries, sandalwood and tea along with plenty of floral influence that includes violet, rose petal and acacia. There is outstanding richness and intensity to the wonderfully tension-filled full-bodied, concentrated and saline-inflected flavors that possess seriously good power on the tautly muscular finish that displays stunningly good length. This is very classy but also quite serious and this is very much a 'buy and forget you own it' jewel. As good as the Ech and Clos de Vougeot are, this just has another dimension of depth.”

The grapes are destemmed and maceration à froid usually lasts just a day or two. The alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous and malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak is around 40-70% percent for the grands crus.

About the Vineyard

Richebourg grand cru was acquired by Étienne’s father in 1984. The total holding is just 0.31 hectares from vines planted in 1949. Richebourg is one of the truly great grand crus of Burgundy. It is exotically spiced and gorgeously perfumed with aromas and flavors of small berries, sandalwood, Asian spice, and dried flowers.
