Wine Description

Domaine Jean Grivot is among the great names in Burgundian wine. Étienne Grivot and his wife Marielle took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The vineyards are densely planted and farmed organically “sans certification” while the aim in the cellar is for balance and clear expression of terroir.

Jean Grivot’s 38.3 acres spread across 22 appellations with vineyards in the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Besides the three grand crus, there are 8 premier crus including the much lauded Les Beaux Monts and Suchots in Vosne-Romanée. The grapes are completely de-stemmed and fermentation is spontaneous.

Acclaim
"Magically concentrated and equally well-structured, this is made for the ages. The aromas start with cobbler fruits simmering in spices then layer on peonies and finally freshly-turned earth. Vinous, sappy and savory all at once, this is held together by crackling acidity and sculpted tannins. True to the Grivot style, oak is used like salt here: to emphasize the wine's own flavors rather than to add external ones. This is one of the Richebourgs of the vintage... at least thus far."
— Tim Atkin, MW, Feb 2022
“(From Richebourg proper). This is aromatically similar to the Echézeaux with its hints of bitter chocolate and kirsch on the aromas of various dark berries and plethora of spice and floral elements. There is outstanding density to the muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract on the chalky, palate coating and massive long finish. This is breathtakingly good though plenty of patience will absolutely be required if you wish to see this gem of a Richebourg at its peak.”

The grapes are destemmed and maceration à froid usually lasts just a day or two. The alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous and malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak is around 40-70% percent for the grands crus.

About the Vineyard

Richebourg grand cru was acquired by Étienne’s father in 1984. The total holding is just 0.31 hectares from vines planted in 1949. Richebourg is one of the truly great grand crus of Burgundy. It is exotically spiced and gorgeously perfumed with aromas and flavors of small berries, sandalwood, Asian spice, and dried flowers.
